Good Afternoon Everyone,

We all have a preconceived notion of what we want in a home.  Those notions are fine as a starting point in a home search.  But, if you are just starting out on your first adventure in to homeownership, you need to put aside the dream and look for something you can live in.

In our area, everyone wants a 3 BR, 2 BA Cabin in the Woods on an acre with a creek running through it.  Spoken tongue in cheek but this is what everyone has in their mind's eye when they come to the White Mountains looking for a home.  What they usually end up with is much different.

First of all there aren't really that many cabins in the woods with a creek running through it.  For starters, even though we have tall pine trees and a cooler climate than the low deserts, we are still a desert.  We are subject to the same extremes in weather here in the high country as they are down below.

Second, even if you can find the cabin in the woods with the creek, you probably wouldn't be able to afford it anyway.  The fact is that when you are starting a home search, you need to determine what is really important to you and what you can do without. 

I have purchased any number of homes over the years and frankly, I still am not living in my dream home.  Why, because it really doesn't exist!  Even if I built my own home, it still would lack something I think I would like in my mind's eye.

So, what am I getting at?  It is simple really, when you are home shopping, don't look for the DREAM, look for something you can live in and be comfortable.  Decide ahead of time what you really want in a home and then let us help you find it.  For every person there is a home that fits, even if it isn't the home of your dreams.  You just need to be diligent in your search and have someone helping you who can translate the wants from the needs and so on.  Then when you finally find "the one" you will all know it.
